Genesis: A Soul Savers Novella is a bit different from the other Soul Savers books. Although the fantasy world I created is the same, the real world is not. After all, it takes place over 2,000 years ago, around 200 B.C. So it required a lot of research to understand life in Greece during that era. For each stop along the release tour, I’m sharing something I learned and how it ties into the story.
So it’s kind of hard to find pictures of the Greek landscape of the time, but, thankfully, we can look at the countryside of today to get an idea. We just have to make our minds focus on nature and try to imagine what the ancient villages and cities might have looked like, rather than the buildings of today.
Greece is surrounded by water, has 1,400 islands and 8,498 miles of coastline, yet is 80% mountainous. It also has the third largest canyon in the world, as well as Mount Olympus. There are immense forests, rocky terrain and plains with lakes and wetlands. With a lot of variety for a relatively small country, the landscape is nothing short of breathtaking. You can take a peek at some pictures on my website at www.KristieCook.com by looking for today’s related blog post.
The landscape plays a significant role in Genesis because the main characters are constantly traveling. They live like nomads in the wilderness, sometimes on the plains surrounded by woods, sometimes in caves in mountains and sometimes by the sea. They are often cresting a hill, looking off a cliff at the sea or hurdling boulders in a canyon. As nomads, they live off the land, finding olives, mulberries, figs and wildlife, including rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and, of course, fish.
I’ve wanted to visit Greece since I was about 12 years old. I still plan to some day soon, but for this book, I had to rely on photos, websites and friends who live there. Fortunately, I found much inspiration that allowed my mind to go there even if my body couldn’t. And a little side hint: We’re not done with Greece and what is now Macedonia – we’ll be back in Devotion, book three in the Soul Savers Series.
