Deborah Cooke Blog Tour

I am happy to have Deborah here today! She has been able to take time out of her schedule to be able to sit down with us for a small interview!

Before we get started here is a little bit about Deborah:

Deborah Cooke has always been fascinated with dragons, although she has never understood why they have to be the bad guys. She has an honours degree in history, with a focus on medieval studies. She is an avid reader of medieval vernacular literature, fairy tales and fantasy novels, and has written over forty romance novels and novellas. She has also been published under the names Claire Cross andClaire Delacroix.
Deborah makes her home in Canada with her husband. When she isn't writing, she can be found knitting, sewing or hunting for vintage patterns.
Connect with Deborah:

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

Haha! I wrote my first book - which was an historical romance called THE ROMANCE OF THE ROSE - for the same reason that many writers first put fingers on the keyboard. I’d thought about writing a book for a long time but always been intimidated by the idea. (100,000 words. Yikes!) I read a lot of historical romance in those days because it was a wonderful escape from the grind of my job and one day, I read one that infuriated me. I didn’t think it was very good and I couldn’t believe it had been published. That make me believe that I could do better, and that conviction started me on the path of writing my first book. Writing a book isn’t that easy, I knew that before I started, but it’s very satisfying when it does come together.

2. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

There are very few writing challenges that bother me. I love writing. I love constructing stories and developing characters and building worlds and playing with language. What I wasn’t prepared for was the business of publishing, and I still find it hard (after 20 years!) to balance the expectations of authors, particularly in terms of promotion. Like many authors, I’m happiest in my office, lost in my fictional worlds. It takes me longer to do promotional tasks than it should because it’s not my best trick. I want a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.”

3. How do you come up with the titles?

When you work with a publishing house, the process of choosing a title is often influenced by the house. For Dragonfire, I suggest titles to my editor. (http://www.deborahcooke.com/dragonfire.html) She takes the ones she likes to the editor in chief, who then makes additional suggestions. This publishing house is particularly interested in unique titles, so the process can be repeated many rounds before we all agree on a title. I’ve worked with other houses that weren’t so worried about titles being unique - for my fallen angel series (http://www.delacroix.net/angels.html), for example, that publisher was fine with my suggested titles and we used them. That’s unusual in my experience, and I was a bit startled at the time.

4. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. I really like Brandon and Liz’s book. If anything, the fact that EMBER’S KISS features the first heroine in the Dragonfire series with paranormal powers of her own makes me wonder if I should have planned the whole series differently. I really like how Liz and Brandon balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and how they make a strong couple. It’s given me a lot of ideas for the future of Dragonfire.

5. What books have most influenced your life most?

It would be hard to pinpoint specific titles. Overall, I’ve read a lot and was an avid reader as a kid. I think that probably my obsession with the fantasy genre has shaped a lot of my assumptions when I write paranormal romance. Maybe it makes my books a bit different. (?)

6. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

At this point, my TBR pile is so well aged that authors new to me are tried and true to everyone else. I’ve fallen way behind on my reading. I read Cassandra Claire for the first time this summer, for example, and loved her work. That’s old news to all the rest of you! (I don’t even know how long I’ve had that book. The rest of the series is in there, too.)

7. What book are you reading now?

Part of the reason my TBR pile gets neglected is that I don’t read fiction in the same genre as I’m writing when I’m writing. So all those paranormal romances are just stacking up. Reading in another genre lets me escape into the story and the reading, instead of thinking analytically about the work I’m reading. Right now, I’m reading Chaucer again.

8. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you for reading my books! A lot of you are curious about the future of Dragonfire, but no spoilers just yet. There’s a post queued up on my blog for November 1, and you can find out the plan for 2013 then and there.: http://www.delacroix.net/wordpress/?p=4306

But now the final reckoning between the Pyr, who count humans among the earth's treasures, and the Slayers, who would eradicate both humans and the Pyr who protect them, is about to begin...
When Sara Keegan decides to settle down and run her quirky aunt's New Age bookstore, she's not looking for adventure. She doesn't believe in fate or the magic of the tarot-but when she's saved from a vicious attack by a man who has the ability to turn into a fire-breathing dragon, she questions whether she's losing her mind-or about to lose her heart...

Quinn Tyrrell has long been distrustful of his fellow Pyr and a self-reliant loner. So when he feels the firestorm that signals his destined mate, he's determined to protect and possess Sara, regardless of the cost to himself. Then Sara's true destiny is revealed-and Quinn realizes he must risk everything- even Sara's love-to fulfill their entwined fates...
But it now:

One act of passion can save the world...
Scientist Alexandra Madison was on the verge of unveiling an invention that would change the world. Then her partner was murdered, their lab was burned, and their prototype was destroyed. While Alex is in the hospital recovering from burns suffered in the fire, recurring dragon-haunted nightmares threaten to land her in the psychiatric ward, but she knows she has to escape to her lab to rebuild the Green Machine.
Handsome, daring, and impulsive, Donovan Shea is more than willing to do his part in the Pyr/Slayer war. Assigned to protect Alex, Donovan is shocked when her presence ignites his firestorm. He has no desire for a destined mate, but Alex's intelligence and determination inspire him to join the fight to save her invention. With the Slayers closing in, Donovan knows he would surrender his life for Alex...and lose his heart to possess her.

Erik Sorensson is focused on leading the Pyr to triumph over theSlayers, even if it costs him his life. When an ancient relic that can turn the tide of the battle reveals itself, Erik knows he has to retrieve it from Eileen's possession. But when he tries to do so, he's shocked by an incredible firestorm that compels him to confront the truth about Eileen's identity. Her presence reminds him of mistakes he's determined not to repeat, and Erik is forced to make a choice: duty or love.
Only by unlocking the secrets of the past can Erik and Eileen fulfill the final prophecy of the Pyr. Can they face their deepest fears and claim their destined love in time to defeat the Slayers?

Rafferty Powell has exchanged challenge coins with his arch-nemesis Magnus Montmorency, and their next battle will be their last. But Rafferty never expected to meet a woman whose desire for Magnus’ downfall matches his own—and whose presence sparks Rafferty’s long-awaited firestorm.
Since facing her own mortality, investigative reporter Melissa Smith has resolved to live without fear. She’s determined to make the seemingly untouchable Magnus pay for his role in ending her friend’s life – no matter the price to herself.
When her quest entwines with Rafferty’s, Melissa finds herself risking more than she ever thought possible. Because the heat between them unleashes the darkfire—an awesome force of Pyrlegend, one that won’t be sated until everything they know has been tested and remade.

He's lost all hope...until she changes everything.
Master illusionist Lorenzo wants nothing to do with the Pyr. His dragon nature is just another secret to hide and another detail to juggle, like ensuring that each of his Las Vegas magic shows is a true spectacle. Until he feels the burn of his firestorm and his whole world shifts....
Cassie Redmond is tired of photographing celebrities. She wants to pursue her dream of serious photography—despite the lucrative offer for a shot of a dragon shifter. Las Vegas is the last place she wants to be, but Lorenzo arouses more than her curiosity when he shifts shape as the finale of his show. Instead of forcing him to reveal his secrets, Cassie gets swept away by this illusionist’s masterful touch.
Lorenzo wants to satisfy the firestorm and put it behind him. But Cassie is hard to forget—and he can’t ignore the danger whenSlayers target the mate Lorenzo didn’t believe he wanted...

Only one woman can persuade him to embrace his powers.
Brandon Merrick is determined to banish his shifter nature forever. The charismatic tattooed surfer is on the cusp of the ultimate challenge - to prove himself on the whitecaps of Hawaii and secure his future as a pro surfer. But his dragon isn't prepared to be tamed so easily...
One look at marine biologist Liz Barrett ignites the spark of the firestorm: Liz is his destined mate and his chance for happiness. While Brandon sees their first night together as just the beginning, his dragon seizes the upper hand. Awakening in the company of a raging dragon challenges Liz's ability to believe her own eyes. Can Brandon accept his inner beast in time to make it work with Liz?
Neither one realizes that Brandon is caught in an ancient Slayer's scheme to enslave him. When the deadly plot ignites, the very island will be at risk...and Brandon and his mate could be the ultimate sacrifice.
